The Dalles is a true blue-collar community. Hard working and down to earth, this small city with a population of 13,000 offers urban shopping centers for neighboring towns and some of the most picturesque geological topography in the country.
Seated next to the mighty Columbia River, The Dalles is surrounded by the rugged beauty of lava layered basalt cliffs carved out by the great Missoula Flood of the last ice age.Twenty minutes east of Hood River and 1 1/2 hours from Portland, The Dalles offers friendly hospitality, warmer weather and world-class fishing and windsurfing locations. It's a great place to find a good home-cooked meal after a fun-filled day on the river, whether fishing, windsurfing, road biking, boating, or kite boarding. This particularly majestic area provides unique hiking and biking experiences as well.

This is a small town that works. One of the top up-and-coming towns in the US in 2008 according to Men’s Journal. A town of hard working people who come together to make extraordinary things happen.
Things like:
  • Building our Q-Life 18-mile fiber optic loop
  • Recruiting Google to locate here
  • Constructing a 9-mile waterfront trail for running, walking, cycling
  • Renewing our historic downtown business district
A town that has fun at its annual Cherry Festival, and laughs at each other with our annual lip-sync contest.
Located along the banks of the mighty Columbia River, just 84 miles east of Portland, The Dalles is the eastern gateway to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Our 300 days of sun nurtures bountiful agricultural products, including world-renowned cherries, grapes and wheat. Cyclists, geocachers, hikers, hunters, fishers, history buffs and wine aficionados are discovering our area.
Steeped in history and culture, the area served as a center of Native American trade for 10,000 years. Lewis & Clark camped along our shores, and here pioneers on the Oregon Trail made the decision to brave the Columbia River or go overland topping Mt. Hood.
With a population of 13,045 and a service area of 85,000, The Dalles is the Gorge’s new hi-tech hotspot, home to Columbia Gorge Community College, which offers the first wind power training program in the Pacific Northwest, the Mid Columbia Medical Center with its world-class Celilo Cancer Care Center, and a thriving business community. While Portland accumulates 37 inches of rain annually and, nearby Hood River County receives 31 inches, The Dalles receives only 14.41 inches.
Living in The Dalles is simply sunsational!
